Today, we’re taking a look at the background of some of our most distinctive and characterful miniatures – the Katmandari. As we’ve explored previously here on the blog, every Dragon’s Forge miniature tells a story, and these cool cats are no exception.
The Katmandari are a race of feline (and occasionally canine) people native to the region of Katmandalay, in the east of the continent of Galberand. Their culture is little understood by those outside their sweltering jungle home, and this suits the Katmandari well. Typically reclusive and introspective, they have a deeply monastic culture steeped in ancient tradition and mystery.
Their placid appearance belies an inclination towards sudden and lethal ferocity when provoked, as evidenced by their long and bitter conflict with the Dragoran Empire over sacred sites along their mutual borders. Thought by many to be deeply in tune with the cosmic order, it is said that the Soulweaver monks of the Katmandari can manipulate the vital essences of mortal beings as effortlessly as a kitten playing with a ball of string.
Not all Katmandari choose the monastic life. Those with an unusually outward-looking temperament can be found far beyond Katmandalay, immersing themselves in the many and varied cultures that Galberand has to offer. In the West it’s not uncommon to see them plying a trade as bards, though they often find themselves baffled as to why their high-pitched singing style generally goes unappreciated by the locals. These balladeering caterwaulers – or ‘Ballawaulers’ as they’re disparagingly known – may not be to everyone’s taste, but they’re nonetheless much sought-after adventuring companions, as their screeching melodies can cause even the most monstrous beasts to turn tail and flee.
Katmandari miniatures are great for representing various feline races in your favourite TTRPGs, such as Leonin or Tabaxi in Dungeons & Dragons. You can find them wandering our MyMiniFactory store and our Patreon welcome pack. They’ll also be appearing as customisable kits in The Forge at launch.
